Behar, Nissim
(1848-1931)
   Palestinian educator, the founder of modern Hebrew education in Palestine. He was born in Jerusalem. He organized schools in the Near East on behalf of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, and from 1882 to 1887 he directed their school in Jerusalem, where he intro-duced Hebrew as a spoken language. He later settled in the US and directed the National Liberal Immigration League from 1906 to 1924.
